‘Pixel’ Building Listed in Sustainability Magazine’s Top Ten, 2026

The Pixel building has been recognised as number 7 in Sustainability Magazine’s “Top 10: Sustainable buildings” 2026, cementing its longstanding position as a leader in environmentally responsible design and innovation.

Ranked alongside internationally recognised projects by Foster + Partners, Gensler, C.Y Lee & partners, and Atelier Jean Nouvelle/PTW the Pixel building was acknowledged for its pioneering contribution to sustainable commercial architecture in Australia.

Located in Carlton, Melbourne, Pixel building became Australia’s first carbon neutral building when it was completed in 2010. The project continues to demonstrate how thoughtful design, renewable energy integration and low impact materials can be situated to reduce environmental impact while creating functional and engaging commercial spaces.

Beyond this it was Decibel Architecture’s office for 7 years.

The Sustainability Magazine feature highlighted several of the buildings sustainability initiatives, including on-site renewable energy systems, rainwater harvesting, a living native rooftop environment and the use of low- carbon construction materials like Pixelcrete.

Additionally, it had smaller moments our staff remember like living edge spandrels that treat grey water, add shade and provide immediate personal greenery in a garden bed that wrapped around the building.

More than a decade after completion, the Pixel building remains an important point of reference for sustainable design in the built environment. Its inclusion in the 2026 global ranking reflects the growing importance the architecture industry is placing on buildings that hit more than the benchmark when it comes to ESD directives.

Pixel achieved a perfect Greenstar rating of 100, and 105 points under the US LEED rating scheme. One of our significant contributions to the growing field of sustainability practice, Pixel is gladly no longer the highest rated building, but it remains an inspiration and demonstration of what is possible.
